Abstract:

This paper investigates how intra-EU trade is affected by China-EU trade. Using panel data to carry out empirical studies, we find that with China-EU trade going up, intra-EU trade goes down. Both baseline estimation and instrumental variable analyses find the same. Further studies also show that, compared to trade among periphery countries, trade among core countries is affected most and the impact on trade between core and periphery countries is in the middle. For UK and Germany, two representative countries in the EU, the trade link with China affects the latter more than the former. As a result, trade between Germany and its EU trading partners has been diverted more strongly. Extended analyses indicate that the “China Effect” in this regard is special. The evidence is that, the trade relations with US and India, the other two important trading partners of the EU, don’t have such impact. Robustness checks by trade in value added confirm these findings.
