The smart shield tunneling machine, which is equipped with high-end intelligent functions co-developed by Shandong University and Jinan Rail Transit Group Co., Ltd, was launched at Fenghuang Station on Jinan Metro Line 6 on Sept 17.

In order to solve various difficulties such as protecting springs and crossing the fault zones, SDU and Jinan Rail Transit Group Co designed high-end serial equipment for the shield tunneling machine, and improved the machine's intelligent perception and cognitive abilities, which is expected to help reduce the safety risk during construction and help the machine adapt to complex and changeable construction environments, and fulfill highly technical tasks.
The high-end machine is equipped with tools functioning as its "eyes", "ears", and "nose" respectively, which enhance the machine's intelligent perception and cognitive abilities, and is operated by the shield center's intelligent decision-making functions.
An innovative geological forecasting system that is built inside the shield tunneling machine can detect geological hazards, such as caves, fault fracture zones, and water, 50 to 80 meters in front of the machine.
In order to lessen the risk of construction settlement, the shield tunneling machine is outfitted with a formation interface identification system that can scientifically pinpoint the distribution law and composite strength characteristics of the soft and hard interface of the composite formation of the shield excavation surface.
A gas environment monitoring system that the machine is equipped with can precisely track 16 different types of hazardous and harmful gases and environmental parameters in order to predict the production of toxic gas in the front and prevent workers from poisoning and shield deflagration.
The shield tunneling machine is also equipped with a hob wear monitoring system to obtain the wear status of the hob in real time in order to provide a reliable basis for the decision to change the tool.
The machine isalsoequipped with a synchronous grouting detection system, which can accurately identify the synchronous grouting effect and guide the secondary grouting effect to ensure the safe operation of the subway.
In addition, the shield tunneling machine is equipped with an auxiliary decision-making support system, which is like the "artificial brain" of the shield machine, enabling it to effectively integrate the geological-shield-structure multi-source data obtained by the five types of equipment, and assist in supporting the active decision-making of the shield through dynamic risk assessment.
