Shandong University (SDU) student Wang Shuhan won first place nationwide in the Junior Mathematics category at the final of the 17th Chinese Mathematics Competition for College Students, held at Sichuan University from April 18 to 19, marking the university's best-ever result in the contest.
All 31 SDU students who advanced to the finals received awards, including eight first prizes, nine second prizes, and 14 third prizes. Among them, Wang, a sophomore at Taishan College, stood out courtesy of his solid mathematical foundations and outstanding on-site performance, securing the top national ranking.
Reflecting on his preparation, Wang said, "My time at SDU Taishan College has been the strongest source of support throughout my journey for the competition."
Taishan College, established as part of China's national initiative to cultivate top talent in fundamental disciplines, plays a key role in nurturing academically prominent students.
SDU has long prioritized the development of high-level innovative talent in basic disciplines. Since the 1990s, the university has launched a range of experimental programs in mathematics, Chinese, and other fields, followed by the establishment of Taishan College in 2010 and Nishan College in 2012. Over the years, SDU has built a distinctive talent cultivation system, contributing to China's advancement of scientific innovation and cultural development.
