The School of Stomatology at Shandong University (SDU) has recently concluded its 2026 summer school, focusing on artificial intelligence applications in dentistry and the clinical management of peri-implant diseases and implant surgery.
An online academic forum themed AI in dentistry assembled experts from Ankara University in Turkiye and top-tier Chinese universities such as Peking University, Sichuan University, and Shanghai Jiao Tong University. The lectures addressed AI-assisted dental imaging and diagnosis workflows, robotic surgical systems used in dental surgery, analysis of oral health data, disease prediction, and AI-powered personalized dental care.
Another module of the program revolved around peri-implant disorders and implant surgery. Hua-Hong Chien, a well-known professor from the Medical University of South Carolina in the United States, delivered online lectures on the diagnosis, clinical examination, and radiographic assessment of periodontal and peri-implant diseases. He also discussed non-surgical periodontal therapy, periodontal surgery, alveolar ridge preservation, and developments in implant surgery.
On July 31, Chien hosted an online practical training session on the Straumann Dental Implant System, demonstrating key procedures and technical requirements in implant surgery. Students inquired about clinical challenges and got their questions answered.
Through lectures, demonstrations, and discussions, both undergraduate and postgraduate students, along with early-career faculty members, gained exposure to recent developments in stomatology. They also enhanced their clinical expertise and improved their international academic communication skills.
