Professors Hu Zhijun and Mu Baoqing from the School of Foreign Languages and Literature at Shandong University (SDU) have completed the English translation of A Multidimensional Study of Tao Yuanming: Textual Research, Philosophical Significance, Rhetoric and Reception. The translation has recently been published by Routledge.

Founded in 1851, Routledge is a leading international academic publisher in humanities and social sciences.

Tao Yuanming is one of the most influential poets and prose writers of ancient China. His writings are known for their reflections on nature, personal integrity and core values of traditional Chinese culture. Routledge also highlights Tao's lasting poetic and cultural significance.

The translation is the final outcome of a 2021 China's National Social Sciences Fund project for the translation of Chinese academic works. The original Chinese monograph, written by Qian Zhixi from Peking University, offers a comprehensive study of Tao's life, philosophy, literary works, and influence.

The book is organized around four major dimensions: textual research, philosophical significance, rhetoric, and the reception history of the poet. It investigates issues related to his life story, explores his views on life and artistic creation, and analyzes his poetry, prose as well as his long‑term influence on Chinese literary history.

The English edition makes this body of Chinese scholarly research more accessible to international readers. By introducing Tao's literary legacy, the book also provides a new resource for cross-cultural communication and the study of classical Chinese literature.
