A seminar on China-ASEAN blue economy cooperation was held at Shandong University's (SDU) Weihai campus on Aug 28, bringing together more than 50 representatives from universities, research institutions, government departments and businesses.
The event was jointly organized by SDU's Business School, a research institute of the Hainan Free Trade Port, and the Institute of Asian Studies at China Foreign Affairs University. The discussions focused on new drivers of China's blue economy, regional cooperation in the marine industry, and enhanced connectivity.
Yang Yu from SDU said that the ocean serves as a natural link between China and ASEAN, while Shandong and Hainan have complementary strengths in marine industries and openness. He said SDU's Business School hopes to deepen cooperation with partner institutions and translate academic research into policy recommendations.
Liu Wen, a professor at SDU's Business School, highlighted the role of the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership in reducing trade costs for aquatic products and creating new investment opportunities. He called for deeper cooperation with ASEAN countries in aquaculture and fisheries, as well as efforts to reduce trade and policy barriers.
SDU Professor Xie Jingci also discussed port connectivity, noting China's strengths in port technology, management and operational efficiency. He emphasized the need to further develop smart ports and expand cooperation in standards and management services.
The seminar explored how closer industrial, trade and infrastructure links can create new opportunities for China-ASEAN blue economy cooperation.
