Abstract:
We will first introduce some basic settings for Frenkel-Kontorova type models in solid state physics and survey about the related both classical and quantum models. We then focus on deposition of one dimensional chains of interacting particles subjected to one dimensional almost-periodic media. We establish both perturbation theories to obtain equilibrium configurations: the KAM theory for close to integrable systems and the theory of anti-integrable limits for fully chaotic systems far away from the integrable. We show that these equilibria could be quite different in the sense that the KAM equilibria do not have phonon gap but the anti-integrable limits do have.
